Which Coffee Has the Most Caffeine?

Which Coffee Has the Most Caffeine?

      9 minute read

Starting the day with the perfect cup of coffee is crucial to so many people. Whether it’s cold brew, espresso, or a latte, it’s a must-have in the morning! A lot of us know all too well the feeling of exhaustion without our morning cup of joe, so, the pressing question is: which coffee has the most caffeine?

There are a lot of different factors that go into the amount of caffeine that a cup of coffee can contain. These factors can include the size of the drink and the strength of the brew, but let’s start with the beans. We all know that the coffee beans start from a seed, and then are dried roasted and ground, but what exactly happens for each step? The coffee cherry starts off with a bright red color and takes about 3 to 4 years for a coffee tree to produce fruit. All the coffee cherries are picked off the tree either by hand or with a machine. Next, the cherries are processed. The cherries are spread out on a surface to dry in the sun. They are moved throughout their drying period, so they don’t go rotten. This process can take many weeks to ensure they are all dried out. Next, the beans are milled and sorted. This is where the beans are looked at by their size and weight and have to make sure they do not have any imperfections to them. The beans are then exported to their next location so they can roast to darken. A roasting machine can reach about 550 degrees Fahrenheit. While in the machine, the beans are constantly moving to ensure they are not burning during the roasting process. Lastly, the beans are ground and brewed. That is how they end up in your cup!

What Kind of Coffee has the Most Caffeine

Did you know there are many different types of beans to choose from? You might be familiar with this if you know the ins and outs of coffee, but to some, this is new information. There are four different types of coffee beans to pick from when making a cup of coffee. So where do we start? The first kind is the most widely used and most popular – it is the Arabica coffee bean. These beans actually make 60% of the population’s coffee! They were the first coffee beans to ever be used and they originated from Ethiopia. Next up, we have Robusta coffee beans. These beans are the second most popular when it comes to using them to make coffee. The Robusta beans are larger than other beans and are grown mostly in Africa and Indonesia. These beans are bit harsher and more bitter tasting. Then we have Liberica coffee beans. These beans have a smoky flavor and they come from Liberia. Lastly, there are Excelsa coffee beans. These beans come from Southeast Asia and grow on 20-to-30-foot coffee plants. The Excelsa beans have less caffeine in them, so if you are looking for a stronger cup of coffee, it might be best to stay away from this kind! So, how should you know which beans to use? If you want coffee that is flavorful and smooth? Go for an Arabica bean – those are the most popular for a reason, right? Maybe you want a little bit more caffeine and don’t mind a bit of bitterness to your coffee? Use a Robusta bean. What beans will you choose?

Which coffee has the most caffeine

The lighter in color the bean is, the more caffeine it has. Although the lighter beans contain more caffeine, they definitely have a more acidic taste to them, so if you really want that coffee bean taste in your morning cup of joe, opt for a lighter roast. There can be a misconception about dark beans though. Dark beans are larger in size and spend a lot longer in a hot roaster, but don’t be fooled – this does not mean these beans contain more caffeine. So, if you want more caffeine, stick with the lighter beans!

We also can’t forget how the coffee is brewed too. Drip and instant coffee will have less caffeine in it compared to espresso or cold brew. Luckily, Primula has what you need to set you up for smooth, delicious espresso and cold brew. Cold-brew has the most caffeine due to its bean-to-water ratio and extended brewing time. Per 16-ounce cup of cold brew, there is about 200 mg of caffeine in it. Next, we have old-fashioned drip coffee. On average, drip coffee (per 8-ounce cup) can have anywhere from 95 to 200 mg of caffeine. An espresso shot can contain anywhere from 45 to 75 mg per shot. So, if you’re looking to wake up and get going, reach for that cup of cold brew!
