Ah, the age-old question about how much water you should drink per day. Everyone knows that drinking water and staying hydrated is an important part of living healthy, but exactly how much are you supposed to drink? We did a little bit of digging to find out the answer.

And the answer is….

It depends. We know, that’s not the pretty, packaged, straight-forward answer you wanted to hear, but it’s true! Depending on the weather and your exercise level, the amount of water you need to drink changes. In hotter weather, it’s important to drink more than you normally would so you can stay hydrated while getting dehydrated from the heat and the sun. Same goes if you’re working out and sweating a lot- you need to replace the water lost with more water, of course.

There’s also another factor that many people don’t think about when trying to figure out how much water they need: the food they intake. Different foods have different water contents. For example, watermelon, pineapple and cucumbers all have high water content, which contributes to your hydration. On the other end of the spectrum, salty foods can dehydrate you, causing you to need more water.

But, there are basic guidelines to follow:

According to a study found in Nutrition Reviews¹, a daily water intake of 3.7L for adult men and 2.7L for adult women meets the needs of a majority of persons. Of course, everybody is different, and that needs to be taken into account when trying to figure out how much water you need.

How do I know if I need more water?

According to an article by Reader’s Digest, common signs of dehydration include, but are not limited to: bad breath, bad mood, sugar cravings, your energy level (especially during working out) is much lower than usual, fatigue, decreased cognitive ability, dizziness when standing quickly and skin that doesn’t immediately fall back into place when pinched.

Additionally, 4 million gallons of water are used in the paper cup manufacturing process, and the fuel used by the trucks, trains and boats needed to distribute them add tremendously to the emission of greenhouse gases.

Even though some paper cups are recyclable, most are not, both because of the coatings used and the fact that wet used cups are not recyclable. The majority of paper cups are coated with a polyethylene resin to help strengthen them – and these carcinogenic chemicals may even leach into your cup of java. Even cups that are biodegradable emit copious amounts of methane gas as they disintegrate in landfills – and 40% of the items decomposing in landfills are paper and cardboard.

The average American uses an incredible 167 plastic water bottles each year—and all told, the U.S. goes through a mind-blowing 1,500 disposable water bottles per second, totaling 129,600 in just one day. Incredibly, some statistics state that only 30% of plastic water bottles are currently recycled, so that means that 70% of them end up in landfills, piled high in non-biodegradable perpetuity—hanging around and polluting the planet for up to a thousand years.

The Difficulty with Disposables

The landfill problem is becoming a worldwide crisis, with floating islands of garbage in the ocean, including the infamous 600,000 square mile Great Pacific Garbage Patch and another recently found in the Caribbean Sea off the coast of Honduras composed almost entirely of plastic.

It’s not just the litter that’s a problem; the creation of disposable plastic bottles uses vast quantities of fossil fuels and water in the manufacturing process. As the demand for disposable bottles diminishes, the less waste will be created in the first place.

Made from a compound called polyethylene terephthalate, disposable plastic bottles are not reusable, either. Manufacturers warn that using them more than once can lead to bacterial contamination, and as the plastic breaks down over time they can leak chemicals and toxins into the water itself.

Some experts also note that the purified or spring water you’re supposedly drinking could be little better than plain tap water. Unless you’re using your own filtration system, you may never know for sure. And even if the water does come from a pure source, the plastic in the bottles can leach cancer-causing chemicals into it, according to some reports.
